OutFront Minnesota has been waiting for this day for 26 years: Governor to sign freedom to marry bill into law at 5pm today!
Tuesday, May 13, 2013, Saint Paul, MN – Yesterday, by a historic and bipartisan vote of 37-30, the Minnesota Senate voted to extend the freedom to marry to same-sex couples. Governor Mark Dayton will officially sign the bill into law today, Tuesday, May 14, at 5:00pm on the steps of the Minnesota State Capitol.
OutFront Minnesota has been working toward this day since 1987. “We were able to achieve this success because of the courageous individuals who stepped forward over the past 26 years and risked everything to come out and work for LGBT equality,” exclaimed Executive Director Monica Meyer.
“We want to thank House Speaker Thissen, Senate Majority Leader Bakk and all of the legislators who voted yes -- and, of course, Governor Dayton who has been so supportive of LGBT equality. We also want to thank each and every person who dedicated their time and energy to make this happen.”
The legislature will adjourn next week, but OutFront Minnesota will continue to work on issues that affect LGBT and allied communities across the state. The organization provides programs and services in the areas of community organizing, public policy, anti-violence and crime victim services, law and education and training.
Minnesota is making history today by becoming the 12th state to grant the freedom to marry for same-sex couples. But we also made history in1993, when Minnesota passed the Human Rights Amendment, which prohibits discrimination against LGBT people in housing, education, employment and public accommodations. Our state was the first to enact gender identity protections.
