Massachusetts lets out of state gays marry there
The state of Massachusetts is allowing out-of-state gay couples to get married there, after a law prohibiting such marriages was repealed. Governor Deval Patrick signed the repeal on July 31st, 2008 after it passed both houses of the legislature.
The 1913 law prohibited out-of-state couples from marrying in Massachusetts if their marriages were illegal in their home state. Reports about the origin of the law have varied – some say the law was intended to prevent interracial marriages; others say it was to prevent marriages of underage people.
